Butterflies have long been the object of ephemeral, whimsical fascination in the human imagination. But humans rarely consider the deeply complex camouflage and mimicry systems which have long safeguarded their species. India’s foremost butterfly expert, Dr. Krushnamegh Kunte, and his team explain why the safety and numbers of Indian butterfly populations are intrinsically tied to human wellness. Their disappearance, which climate change and industry have accelerated, could quite literally have a “butterfly effect” - a rippling, irreversible impact - on food production and climate mechanisms that our collective survival is hinged on. And while the fragile creatures have self-evolved robust processes to evade predators and guard their larvae, with growing human and climate threats, it may be time for some expert interventions.
